Mazda generously gave us a car to use for the week; this story is my own.
A few weeks ago, Chris and I drove to Nashville (sans kids!) for a fun weekend away to celebrate my mom’s birthday. It’s a 5.5 hour drive and while we could’ve listened to music the entire time, we wanted to dive into the world of Podcasts (aka free radio ‘shows’ you can listen to as episodes). I asked for recommendations on Instagram and had tons of awesome suggestions. We are HUGE fans of True Crime stuff (hi, Dateline and Snapped and Making a Murderer!) and it was pretty easy to settle on something we both found interesting.
Mazda sent us a 2018 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring to drive to Nashville and it was the perfect road tripping vehicle! The CX-9 is an AWD crossover SUV with 3 rows, 2 if you want plenty of space for luggage in the trunk. Everything was really easy to navigate in the car – tons of thoughtful details, like:
- window shades on the back doors
- a big touch screen smart center in the front
- rear backup camera, a moonroof
- rain-sense windshield wipers
- power button open & close on the rear lift/trunk
- plenty of cup holders
- a USB port for charging
- leather seats (heated in the front & second row)
- front parking sensors – lifesaver!
- LATCH connectors for all the mommas (and dads and grandparents and everyone who hauls around a kid or 3)

And the list of the best True Crime Podcasts for Road Trips, according to you:
More Perfect – ok, this isn’t exactly true crime but it’s about the Supreme Court, which deals with true crime. This one is on my list.
Someone Knows Something – there are 4 seasons of this and each takes on a different unsolved murder.
Criminal – this one is an award-winning podcast that looks at crime as a “function of people, time, and place”
Finding Tammy Jo – a podcast about an unsolved murder from 1979.
Missing – this one investigates the world of missing people – including those who disappear on purpose.
Up and Vanished – this one is about an 11-year-old unsolved murder of a Georgia beauty queen – it’s the largest open case file in the history of the state of Georgia. Next on my list, for sure!
Missing & Murdered: Finding Cleo – a murder mystery that’s still unsolved from the 1970s.
Atlanta Monster – we started our road trip listening to Atlanta Monster. It’s both sad and disturbing and perplexing at the same time.
In The Dark – this is a true crime story about a child abduction and murder and how this case shaped ‘stranger danger’ and national sex offender registries. As a mom, I have a hard time listening to stories like this but it sounds really interesting.
My Favorite Murder – these girls are killin’ it! No pun intended. But, for real, they have an actual tour and 100+ episodes. People swear by this podcast – can’t wait to start it.
Serial – this is the first podcast I ever listened to and still one of the best. Need to listen to season 2!
Dirty John – this one was CRAZY. We listened to the entire thing on the way home and I couldn’t believe how completely clueless the main character, Debra, was. I was totally interested from the first minute of the first episode.
S-Town – stands for Shit-Town Alabama and it’s a story of murders, feuds and treasure. I’m in.
