My oldest started school a few weeks ago and although she did AMAZING with the transition to kindergarten, it was a little rough on me as a mom, mainly because it’s a big step forward and symbolizes the start of really “growing up”. Some of my dearest mom friends have told me that being a parent really doesn’t get easier as your child grows up, it just gets different – your kids start to have problems you can’t rush to fix with a hug and a kiss. To make sure she’s ready for anything in this big kindergarten transition, Quinn and I spent the day together shoe shopping at Famous Footwear (they have the best selection for back-to-school!) and I put together this list of 15 things I want my daughter to know:
self-worth is not determined by other people or society
Your opinion of yourself is the most important opinion!
girls can be superheros too!
Strong, brave and super – girls can do it all, too.
you’re responsible for what you say, not how others feel
But be kind š
love yourself even when you don’t like yourself.
It’s ok to be disappointed, upset, or mad – but you also need to be able to forgive.
never feel guilty for being you
Be YOU without apology, without hesitation, and without shame. We will always love who you are.
always choose kindness
You will never regret it.
be true to yourself
The only person you can be is yourself – be kind, be fun, be you.
kindness is not weakness
You can still be strong and assertive and a leader while being kind. You never know someone else’s truth or journey.
don’t quit
Follow through with a commitment – it builds a lot of character and you’ll be glad you stuck it out.
always write thank you notes
It’s the right thing to do.
it’s ok to be a kid!
Childhood is fleeting – don’t rush growing up too quickly!
you are loved
Unconditionally, forever, always and unwaveringly so.
you can tell me anything
I will ALWAYS be here to listen to what you have to say and I’ll always be a safe place for you.
your words are powerful
People are strong, but words are stronger – use them kindly and wisely.
you are capable
You can do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING you set your mind to.
know your worth
And don’t sell yourself short.
bodies come in all shapes, sizes, and colors
Love yours and treat it kindly. Life would be boring if we all looked the same.
you’re one-of-a-kind
The only YOU in the whole world. That’s pretty special.
it’s cool to be a smart girl
Smart is pretty. Smart is worthy.
Of all these lessons I *hope* I’m instilling in my daughter to make her a strong, capable young lady, at almost 6-years-old, what I really want most for her is to BE HERSELF, unapologetically and proudly. So when we went back-to-school shoe shopping at Famous Footwear, I said YES to the light-up Minnie high-tops she wanted – you do you, Quinn.
Side note: I love shopping at Famous Footwear because they have tons of cute brand-name shoes for the whole fam (including me!) and it’s easy in, easy out.
me: look at these cute Converse! you could totally match me
Quinn: no, thanks
me: or these Vans are totally adorable
Quinn: {silence, turns head toward light up shoes}
me: ooook let’s try these beauties
Quinn: mom, don’t I look amazing?!
Quinn: I said, AMAZING!
both of us: those bows are adorable. Minnie for the win!
ready to wear these sneaks out of the store!
but first, a pit stop for socks… Famous Footwear has some CUTE options – like these with a mermaid fin and these fun little critter no-show socks … both sets are now living in Quinn’s sock drawer š
It’s always good to spend one-on-one time with my gal but we especially enjoyed getting to spend the morning doing something we both love… shopping ;). Like mother, like daughter! Quinn also chose this pair of sequin combat boots – LOVE her confidence! So far, she’s started the year being herself and I couldn’t be more proud. <3
