I’m in my 28th month of breastfeeding (over 5% of my life!!!) and in that time I’ve learned a thing or two about feeding the nursing hunger beast. Postpartum and breastfeeding hunger is REAL and I always eat more in the first couple months of breastfeeding than I ever did while pregnant. Breastfeeding burns 400-500 calories/day – my favorite workout ever! Did you know that the taste of your breastmilk changes depending on the food you eat? The human body is pretty weird cool.
There are two criteria for nursing-friendly snacking:
- It’s gotta be something you can eat one-handed while also feeding a baby – convenience is key
- It has to be healthy – meaning it gives you energy and healthy calories
Here are the best snacks for breastfeeding:
Best Snacks for Breastfeeding Fruits & Veggies
Obviously fruits & veggies are super important any time but especially while you’re nursing. Some of these I mix in or add to other foods, others I just grab on-the-go:
- Strawberries
- Blackberries
- Blueberries
- Raspberries
- Bananas
- Apples
- Tangerines
- Grapes
- Carrots
- Pears
- Spinach – throw it into a smoothie or on a sandwich
- Avocado – SO good mashed on toast or by itself
Perishable Proteins
Protein is super important while breastfeeding because protein is a major component of breastmilk. Here are some of the best protein-rich foods to eat at home:
- Lunch Meat – use lean ham, turkey, roasted chicken or roast beef and roll them up for a one-handed snack
- Hummus
- String Cheese
- Cottage Cheese
- Yogurt
- Hard Boiled Eggs
Breakfast
I’m not usually a huge breakfast person but when I’m nursing, I do NOT miss the first meal of the day:
- Oatmeal
- Granola
- English Muffins
- Peanut Butter
- Non-sugary cereal

On-The-Go Protein Snacks & Power Foods
When you’re nursing, you can’t always eat a meal at the table at a normal time – on-the-go snacks are essential. I always keep these in my bag for when hanger (hunger-induced anger) strikes:
- Lorissa’s Kitchen Meat Snacks – these are my fave because they’re made of 100% grass-fed beef, have 11 grams of protein per serving, no added growth hormones, preservatives or nitrites. Perfect to toss in the diaper bag or keep in the car. There are 4 amazing flavors (sweet chili, I love you!) + their story is pretty amazing. - Raw Almonds
- Roasted Chickpeas
- Walnuts
- Peanuts
- Pistachios
- Pretzels – watch the serving size! š
- Granola Bars – look for something low in sugar
- Protein Powder – for a protein shake
